"Someone took my peanut butter and jelly sandwich." Tommy Morgan looked up from his lunch sack and frowned.
Jeff and Abby, who were working as counselors at day camp, looked around the table. All the kids were eating sandwiches, and several looked like peanut butter.
Jeff sat down next to Tommy. "What kind of jelly?" he asked quietly.
"Blackberry. We were out of grape. That's my favorite."
"Blackberry seeds stick in my teeth," Jeff said, making a face.
"Mine too, but Mom stuck in a toothpick," Tommy said.
Abby took a picture of the group for the camp scrapbook before sitting down. She and Jeff studied the kids at the table.
Tommy sat beside his brother Tim. Tim broke his PBJ sandwich in two, and gave Tommy half. Jon Smith had two sacks. He pulled a chicken leg out of one and a sandwich out of the other. Sara Runkle leaned on the table, looking sleepy. Her sack stood open but she wasn't eating yet. Mark Bates left his lunch sack closed while he pretended to pour catsup in Sara's milk. Joy Adams had orange stuff running down her chin. "I love marmalade," she said.
"I like bologna and cheese sandwiches best of all." Sara bit into her sandwich and frowned. "Ouch." She rubbed her gum.
"Sharp cheese?" Mark cracked up at his own joke.
"Mark always tries to pull jokes. He could be guilty," Abby said. "Or Jon eats a lot and might have wanted an extra sandwich. I'm not sure who stole Tommy's PBJ."
"I am," Jeff said, smiling. "And you will be too, if you shoot another picture."
Abby raised her camera. "Say 'cheese,' everybody."
Everyone smiled and Abby knew. Do you?
