ABOUT BETTY JO

BETTY JO SCHULER is a former elementary teacher and the author of sixteen published books for children, teens, and adults.  Published in both fiction and non-fiction, electronically and in print, she likes trying different things.

Her children’s fiction, which you’ll find on this site, includes several chapter books.  BABY FOR SALE and SECRET 'TILL WE'RE GROWN are based on the adventures of a group of young kids who live on a cul-de-sac. VANILLA, PLAIN, AND SHY is about a girl who overcomes her shyness “in front of the whole world” when she wins her mom a dream wedding. RAIN MAN and DOUBLE TROUBLE DITTO BOX feature middle-grader Randy O'Rourke and his unpredictable inventions. ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST (Willowisp, 1991), the story of a town where everything is backward, was her first published chapter book for children.  Much loved by children, it’s now out of print, she’s sorry to say.

HEARTTHROB, a young romance (Bantam, 1995) that was Betty Jo's first young adult book, is also out of print.  Her more recent teen titles, SECOND CHANCE AT LOVE and CAMP CHEER, a pick-a-path mystery, were named to the Excellent E-Book Eleven at "E-Books for Kids," and CAMP CHEER was a young adult book finalist in the 2001 EPPIES (awards for outstanding works first published in electronic format.)  NO RAIN, NO RAINBOWS, a collection of stories she wrote for teens, was nominated in the anthology category in 2000.   You’ll find these books and those for grownups on her other site.

“Fiction is fun to write,” she says, but she wrote her first non-fiction book, BULLY BRIGADE (DiskUs Publishing) because being bullied isn’t fun, and kids need to know why some kids bully others and learn how to stop them.  An EPPIE children’s finalist in 2006, this book is easy-to-read with thought-provoking questions and humorous illustrations by artist Susan Scott that make it suitable for various ages and abilities.

Schuler and Scott’s second non-fiction book, B-FORCE, is a superhero and heroine comic book for older students that deals with more serious issues and solutions for both the bullied and the bully.  Suitable for middle-graders and high schoolers, this book appears on both of Schuler’s sites.

A Teacher’s Guide and Reproducible Activity Kit to aid classroom teachers, home schoolers, and counselors is available for each of these books.

Betty Jo, who has a B.S. in Education from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and M.A. from Ball State U, Muncie, Indiana, taught school for twenty-three years.  Formerly a Midwesterner, she now lives in Florida with her husband of thirty years where she teaches Writer’s Digest online courses, “Fundamentals of Writing for Children,” “Focus on Writing for Children,” and “You Can Write a Romance.”  In addition, she’s a Barnes and Noble University instructor for “You Can Write Children’s Books.”   Her children’s site is linked to America Writes 4 Kids.
